The Freestate

The Eastern Freestate & Clarens

They say the Freestate is flat and unappealing.  Really?  Travel to the Eastern Freestate and you will experience some of the most beautiful views in our country.  Getting to the Eastern Freestate takes you past the blooming farmlands of the real Freestate, but as soon as you reach Bethlehem, Mother Nature greets you with majesty and splendour, while Bethlehem offers you a well-earned break from travelling.

From there it is on to Clarens and all this amazing little town has to offer – from great restaurants, accommodation facilities, activities and the awesome views of the Maluti Mountains.  Clarens to Fouriesburg offers 36 kilometres of the most spectacular scenery on a road fit to travel.  Stop for a drink at one of the local pubs and just sit back and drink it all in, before enjoying the return trip.

Then, of course, there is the Golden Gate National Park.  Stop for breakfast at Kiara Lodge before entering this great park.  The roads are good to travel on and you have to take your time to enjoy all the beauty there is on offer.  So why do we always think other countries are better looking than ours, when a real pot of gold is on our doorstep – only 304 km’s from Johannesburg, 279 km’s from Bloemfontein and 402 km’s from Durban.

Travel the Maluti Mountains of the Eastern Freestate and you will definitely change your mind.

Memel

For a really superb weekend outing - from wonderful views while riding to excellent hospitality at the local hotel - Memel is the place to go to.

Memel means 'surrounded by water'.  This small pristine country village is situated in the NE corner of the Free State close to the Drakensberg escarpment, only 240 km from Johannesburg and 300 km from Pietermaritzburg.    The area is noted for mainly three things:

  • Its breathtaking scenic beauty.
  • The spectacular internationally important 2000 ha Seekoeivlei Wetlands - listed as a Wetland of International Importance (RAMSAR) - which is situated in the Reserve along the Klip River.
  • The district is also noted for its estimated 350 bird species including many 'specials' and 15 Red Data listed species. Memel is becoming a great birding destination.

Parys

Parys is the gateway to the Vredefort Dome.
The Oldest and largest meteorite impact
site in the world.
This picturesque town on the Vaal River reminds you of the French city on the banks of the Seine.
Today Parys offers a happy medium between old world country charm and adventurous outdoor activities.

For a lovely relaxing trip from Johannesburg, you can try Paris-On-Vaal. This is a great trip for winter, when riding time is limited.  Enjoy!
